The unique service for finding exceptional and elusive
titles to add to a library's collection.
Williamsport, Pennsylvania - June
5, 2003 - Brodart's Book & Automation
division, the premier provider of circulation-ready books
to libraries, today announces their new program, GEMS.
GEMS newsletter is devoted to exceptional quality found
in small press offerings. It will be published quarterly.
It will be available in print and (in expanded form) on
the web at www.gems.brodart.com.
Librarians scour the publishing world for little-known,
overlooked but valuable books. The excellent efforts of
many writers, editors and publishers are lost in the huge
number of books published every year. Brodart has committed
itself to a regular program of alerting librarians to discoveries
of such works. The newsletter will feature approximately
200-300 adult/juvenile and fiction/nonfiction titles. It
will also feature editorial content such as articles on
publishers, authors, and collection development. It has
been designed to put the spotlight on exceptional small
press titles and will be distributed free to public libraries.
"Books that are both uncommon and excellent add a
certain texture to a library's collection that enriches
the experience of all patrons," notes David Franklin,
vice president of Brodart's Book Division. "GEMS will
highlight the works of lesser-known writers, especially
from smaller publishers. We hope this will broaden libraries'
choices, making their collections richer and more responsive
to patrons."
Libraries, not unlike most
other book buyers, purchase the vast majority of titles
from major publishers. Brodart
provides books from over 20,000 different publishers and
imprints every year. But 90% of these books are received
from fewer than 100 publishers. Only 1% of all books purchased
from Brodart by schools and public libraries come from
the over 3,000 "small" publishers the company
represents.

New Main Library houses expanded
collections tailored to library patrons’ wishes.
To enhance their existing collection
for the grand opening of a new downtown library complex,
Salt Lake City Public
Library chose Brodart Book Services, a division of Brodart
Company, for assistance with selection lists, ordering,
customized cataloging and processing of their new books.
When Salt Lake City Public
Library opens the doors of its spectacular, new Main
Library on February 8, patrons
will have access to an expanded collection of 500,000 books,
audio and visual resources, including materials in nearly
20 different languages. Approximately 70,000 new items
have been added, giving patrons the scope and breadth they
requested of their new library’s collection.
“Brodart was instrumental in supplying the majority
of books as we enhanced our new Main Library collections
and by providing cataloging and processing of these materials,” said
Hikmet Loe, Salt Lake City Public Library’s technical
services manager. “We couldn’t have done it
without them.”
Since Salt Lake City Public
Library typically handles collection development, cataloging
and processing internally,
Loe said she was pleased to work with an experienced vendor
like Brodart. A pioneer in customized cataloging and item-level
processing, Brodart Co. has been providing libraries with
shelf-ready books since 1958. “It was great to work
with a really seasoned vendor who knows all the fine details
of cataloging and processing and could access materials
in a timely manner,” Loe noted.
Before deciding to outsource
the project, Loe conducted a cost analysis of hiring
additional technical staff to
handle the additional workload, but outsourcing was much
more cost effective. “We would’ve had to double
our technical services staff, so outsourcing this project
has been fabulous. It’s really enabled us to enhance
our collections.” she said.
“Our highly skilled Compleat Book-Serv® team
provides professional service and ongoing communication
to ensure that our library customers’ specifications
are followed down to the most minute detail,” said
Michael Wilder, senior director of Brodart’s Compleat
Book-Serv. “Our customers typically begin to think
of us as an extension of their own technical services department.”

New subscription service
provides libraries with professionally selected and cataloged
web
sites appropriate for children.
Brodart Company’s Automation Division, a leading
provider of library technology serving schools and libraries
worldwide, has introduced DartClix 4 Kids, an offshoot
of the company’s popular DartClix subscription service
which provides professionally selected and cataloged web
sites that can be imported directly into a library’s
existing bibliographic file and viewed in the online public
access catalog (OPAC).
With DartClix 4 Kids, subscribers
receive a backlist of more than 2,400 records and approximately
100 new web sites
each month. DartClix 4 Kids records are selected by library
professionals, ensuring subscribers will receive only high-quality,
information-rich web sites. DartClix 4 Kids enables students
and patrons to access age-appropriate web sites when searching
their library’s online public access catalog (OPAC)
without performing time-consuming searches via the Internet.
Students and patrons can go directly from the OPAC to the
web site, by clicking on the URL in the MARC record.
“DartClix 4 Kids was developed in response to our
library customers who are seeking a convenient way to make
readily accessible web sites that are age-appropriate for
children,” said Sally Wilmoth, Director of Marketing
and Sales for Brodart’s Automation Division. “Our
subscription service saves librarians the time-consuming
task of selecting and cataloging web sites, and allows
users to quickly access kid-friendly sites in one, convenient
search.”
While subscribing libraries may have a different way of
presenting their OPAC to their students or patrons, each
DartClix 4 Kids record appears the same and can be found
the same way in any OPAC. All records adhere to current
AACRII cataloging standards. Each record also contains
a contents field, the URL, a summary, an audience level,
and multiple subject fields.
As part of the DartClix 4 Kids subscription service, Brodart
monitors the records and delivers a monthly maintenance
report to subscribers. The report includes any edits or
changes that need to be made to the record as well as inactive
sites that need to be deleted.

Brodart Company, a leading provider of books, services,
supplies, furniture and technology serving schools and
libraries worldwide, has appointed Peter W. Tobey as marketing
director for the Book Services Division. Tobey brings a
strong business development and marketing background to
Brodart and will provide strategic leadership to the Book

development and marketing skills as owner and operator
of publishing, advertising and Internet companies. Most
recently, he served as founder and chief executive of Merritt
Applications, Inc., an Internet-based business devoted
to safety analysis and employee monitoring of large automobile

agency for 15 years and previously headed a book publishing
company that produced scores of trade paperbacks and hundreds
of massmarket fiction titles. He also served as editor

"I'm excited to join Brodart for many reasons—chief
among them is the company's experience delivering custom
solutions to schools and libraries,” Tobey said. “In
this era of customized products and instant communication,
Brodart's commitment to individually-tailored collection
development, cataloging and processing positions us for
solid service and growth."

California Association of Library Trustees and Commissioners
honors book and services company for contributions to the
community.
Brodart Company, a leading
provider of books, services, supplies, furniture and
technology serving schools and
libraries worldwide, is the recipient of a California Association
of Library Trustees and Commissioners (CALTAC) Award for
2002. The CALTAC honors a U.S. business for making the
most significant financial or in-kind contribution to a
library during the year. Brodart Company was nominated
for the award by the Rancho Cucamonga Public Library for
outstanding service and financial sponsorship of the library’s
annual telethon fundraiser.
For the past five years, Brodart
has donated popular books as an incentive to Cucamonga
Library supporters who pledge
$50 or more. The telethon has helped raise more than $275,000,
enabling the library to build a public-access technology
center, partially fund their literacy and after-school
tutoring program, purchase materials for the bookmobile,
and buy more than $100,000 worth of books and computer
software for their children’s library.
“Working with a company that both understands and
believes in libraries is important to us, and Brodart has
demonstrated that they support the ideals of literacy and
the importance of outreach into a community,” said
Deborah Kaye Clark, director of the Rancho Cucamonga Public
Library.
Brodart Sales Consultant Loree
Tillman will be accepting the award on behalf of Brodart
Company at the CALTAC Awards
Luncheon November 17 at the California Library Association
Conference in Sacramento. In addition to Brodart’s
corporate sponsorship of Rancho Cucamonga’s telethon,
Tillman has volunteered her own time during the telethon
staffing the phone bank, describing the book incentives “on-air,” and
making personal monetary donations.
“Being an advocate for libraries is not only key
to me personally, but also to Brodart,” said Tillman. “It
goes beyond business; it’s about genuinely supporting
the mission of libraries and lifelong learning. Everyone
at Brodart is committed to the support and advancement
of libraries.”
