About Elizabeth Tanguma - Brodart’s Graphic Novel Selector
From the age-old debate whether graphic novels are 'real books' to seeing teens make new friends by the manga shelf, Liz Tanguma has first-hand experience navigating the ups and downs of advocating for graphic novels.
Based and raised in South Texas, Liz grew up relying on school and public libraries. Like many children and young adults, she gravitated towards what little comics and manga there was to be had, sparking her love of graphic novels. As a public librarian, she specialized in children's services and collection curation, revitalizing her library's graphic novel collection across age groups. Additionally, she has presented and consulted on collection development strategies that focus on representation and diversity at a statewide level. As Brodart's Graphic Novel Selector, she applies her frontline experience to select titles that help libraries meet their evolving community needs - from bestselling series to groundbreaking indie comics.
Liz believes graphic novels have a unique power as windows, mirrors, and doors. Engaging reluctant readers of all ages, supporting English language learners, showcasing dazzling art, voicing lived experiences -
graphic novels are a multipurpose tool for libraries to build collections with both depth and breadth.
At Brodart, her goal remains constant: to help libraries build collections that reflect and inspire their communities—one comic book at a time.
